The New Dark Age... by Alan Caruba

The New Dark Age
By Alan Caruba

In the 1970s, as a public relations consultant, I helped introduce a new pesticide to the American market. More specifically, to the pest control industry as it was not available for use by the public. It was called “Ficam” and, after having undergone the costly Environmental Protection Agency registration process, it was quickly and widely used by pest control professionals, not just for its capacity to eliminate cockroaches and a variety of other pest insects, but because it was applied with nothing more toxic than water.

For two decades this pesticide thrived. I wrote case histories of where it was used in hotels, casinos, restaurants, and theme parks, as well as in homes and apartments. The pest control profession embraced it and there never was a single case of it causing any hazard to those who applied it or benefited from it.

I never found out why, but for some reason the EPA demanded that the manufacturer re-register the product and the decision was made that would be withdrawn instead. It was just too costly to prove what everyone already knew. It worked wonders protecting people against the diseases and property damage a wide variety of insect pest species cause on a daily basis.

The EPA did a similar number on a pesticide called “Dursban.” This excellent pesticide had been around for decades and was widely used because it was a component in more than 80 products that the public could purchase off the shelf of the supermarket or garden supplies store. The EPA proceeded to restrict its consumer use against insect pests. If it posed such a health hazard, why wasn’t there evidence of countless people being affected? Who benefited from its loss? The insects.

Some may remember the “Alar” crisis that impacted the apple growers, particularly in the northwest. Millions of dollars were lost until it became clear that there was no threat whatever to the public from its use. People are still safely eating apples, just as they were before an environmental group perpetrated the manufactured crisis.

The reason cited for these actions is called “the precautionary principle” that says that, if anything poses a possible risk, no matter how small, a chemical cannot be used. Proof of its effective use, in the case of pesticides, in protecting the public against the vast range of diseases pest insects or rodents routinely spread, was not to be considered.

What any chemist or pharmacist will tell you is “the poison is in the dose.” It is the amount of exposure that determines the level of hazard and we routinely eat, drink, and use things that have chemicals as part of their structure in such minute quantities as to constitute no threat. As just one example, potatoes contain trace amounts of arsenic, a deadly poison, but no one is ever going to consume enough potatoes at a single sitting.

I was reminded of this when I recently read of still more fear mongering against a plastic ingredient called bisphenol-A, otherwise known as BPA. The food packaging industry has used BPA in the linings of metal cans since as far back as the 1950s. It is also used to make hard plastic as well as lacquers for bottle tops, water pipes, and even dental sealants and tooth coatings.

The Environmental Working Group, a self-anointed “watchdog” organization rolled out the usual scare campaign in early March, claiming that BPA “may be poisoning pregnant women and infants” according to a study by the Group. Typically, these “studies” involve force-feeding huge amounts of the chemical to laboratory rats until a correlation can be made that it poses a threat to humans, but correlation is not the same as causation.

I can assure you that the cost of the canned foods identified and probably all others is about to rise. Indeed, the cost of everything that uses chemicals in the course of its manufacture is going to rise.

The reason for this is a program initiated by the European Union that has passed sweeping new chemical regulations that will go into effect in June. Based on that idiotic precautionary principle, the EU has instituted a program intended to rid the world of chemicals they deem to have an impact on the environment and human health. It is called “Green chemistry” and it has more to do with eliminating the use of beneficial chemicals than in offering any protection to Mother Earth and human beings.

The U.S. Commerce Department is putting on “roadshows” for U.S. businesses to bring them in line with the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (“REACH”) regulations.

As Kathleen Morson of Stratfor, a private intelligence group that advises U.S. corporations, says, “The REACH regulation represents a shift from the Western regulatory world’s reliance on risk assessment to something more precaution-based. Significantly, it shifts the regulatory burden from government agencies to the producers themselves to demonstrate that their chemicals are safe.”

No chemical is safe if it is ingested in an amount wherein the dose becomes injurious. This includes the chemical we commonly call water.

Because American manufacturers commonly export their products all over the world and Europe represents a major market for them, they will have no choice but to submit to this EU plan to restrict chemicals, some of which have been safely in use for decades and longer. A little group of Green gnomes in Helsinki will decide the fate of every chemical in use today.

This is what I predict. At some point in the future, after most of the world’s pesticides and herbicides, after chemicals used to clean water, after various chemicals used in the ways plastic is a part of our lives have been restricted, a huge plague will make its way across the world. It will be spread as the famed Black Plague was, by insect and rodent pests, and it will kill countless millions of people.

A new Dark Age will follow. It will, in fact, have been in place since the imposition of the European Union’s draconian anti-chemical program was imposed. What is REACH really about? It’s about killing you.

The Dems are Suffering a Complete Nervous Breakdown!

Is There no Testosterone Left in Washington???
_________________

What in the world is going on in our nation’s legislature????

The President decides to fire eight (8)… count ‘em, eight!!!! US Attorneys and the Dems go ballistic. And to make matters worse the US Attorney General apologizes???? My God, what the hell FOR???

US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President. That is the law. They can be hired and fired whenever the President feels like it. For whatever reason the President may have, or… for no reason. So, for whatever the reason the President chose to fire 8 of them. The Dems, always on the edge of a complete nervous breakdown, came unglued! Their paranoia has gotten the better of them, again! Now they want to investigate, and investigate, and drag every administration official to the Hill to submit like, trained terriers, to the abuse of the over inflated, self important, yet impotent, bunch of old hippies and flower children from the 60’s! What a clown show! What a disgrace! … And the Attorney General goes before the microphones to apologize for doing his job and doing it in compliance with the law?

Are there no grown-ups left in DC???

We knew it would be only a matter of time before the Dems imploded. But, honestly, we thought it would take longer than 90 days or less! This, however, is insanity!

Did anybody remember that their favorite “rutting” President, Bill Clinton, fired ALL 93 US Attorneys when he took office? Huh? I didn’t hear a peep from them then, did you? Where was the camera loving Senator from New York then? Huh? (Not Mrs. Bill Clinton. She was married to the guy who fired all 93 US attorneys at the time. So she has to keep a low profile on this one.)

Already, I am sick to the bone of the childish, paranoid, gutless, behavior of the Dems in Congress!

Let me tell you Dems something, which seems to have slipped your attention. Your actions, just since the first of the year, have galvanized the Conservative movement in this country. You actions have focused our attention, like a laser beam, on your insufferable arrogance and your insatiable lust for raw power. You have demonstrated your intent to criminalize anything conservative, or even simply Republican, and we will not let you get away with it! You have conned yourselves into believing your own press releases. You have further conned yourselves into believing you have some sort of “Mandate” from the people to force our military to run like cowards in the face of the enemy and take to their heels enroute to some undisclosed “redeployment area”. Yours is despicable behavior. It is dishonorable behavior. It is behavior un-American from top to bottom. It is more akin to Stalinism than Americanism.

Look, we conservatives bowed out in the last election to teach the Republican Party a lesson. A lesson, I might add, the GOP has chosen to ignore. Now Conservatives are mad as hell, and we’re not going to take it any more! (to quote Howard Beal) If the GOP doesn’t get off it’s collective “dead arses” in DC and get us some Presidential candidates we can vote for, we’re gonna have to come up with our own, even if he is an Independent. The three stooges running now, under cover of the Republican Party, represent the old “country club set” and the “blue blood set” of the Republican party. They’re not that much different from the Democrats in power in the Congress today and we WILL NOT VOTE FOR THEM!

Think I'm a lone voice crying in the wilderness about this lack of Conservative candidates supported by the GOP? Well, go here and disabuse yourselve of that misconception:

Remember the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy”? Well, it’s BAAAaaack! And this time WE ARE PISSED! You “lefties”, serving in the US government, might find it prudent to begin updating your resumes… ‘cause you’re gonna need them soon.

The defecation is about to hit the rotary oscillator!

Run, John, Run!… Away from Fox News!!!

Run, John, Run!… Away from Fox News!!!
_________________________

Still have doubts about the spine of John Edwards? Huh?

OK, surely the fact that Mr. Edwards has extreme difficulty facing reporters, who do not necessarily subscribe to his brand of politics, grabbed your attention… did it not? Well, it should have!

I am from Edwards’s home state. Either one! He lays claim to “The Carolinas”. Like him, I was born in South Carolina and spent over half my life in North Carolina. So, I have a pretty fair handle on Mr. Edwards… at least as far as his politics goes. And it ain’t good!

The folks over at World Net Daily have a piece you should read. It’s titled “John Edwards the Wuss”! It is written by Barbara Simpson. She sums it up pretty well.

We recommend you visit World Net Daily and read it. You’ll find it at:

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=54651

You know, it says something about a politician when the people of his own state will not vote for him on a national ticket. But, then, I don’t expect you to listen to Tar Heels who have experienced his “leadership” in Washington. Suffice it to say that had NC not had ANOTHER representative in the Senate we would have had NO representation in that body. THIS state has had all it wants, and then some, of Edwards. And… we do not wish him on the remaining 49 states!

Actually, North Carolina hasn’t had a REAL Senator since Jesse Helms retired. Now, Jesse was a “North Carolina kind” of Senator. He didn’t mince words, he was plain spoken, and everyone knew where he stood on all the issues. Jesse continued to be elected by Democrats, and Republicans alike, from this state. Unfortunately, there is not likely to be another Jesse Helms… and we are the worse for it.

The point is… North Carolina has had the best Senator possible for the state. On the other hand we have had the worst, too. I believe I pointed out whom the best was. It’s up to you to decide the worst.

Senators are rarely elected to the position of President of the US. Most folks believe they are not trained for it. They have no “executive” background… is one way to put it. But, ask yourself this… if a former Senator has the reputation of having been one of the worst Senators, ever, how, then, can we expect him to be even a passable President? That’s the question all you folks in the 49 other states have to ask yourselves. As for the Tar Heels, we made that decision a while back.

Fred Thompson to Run for the White House??? Finally, a CONSERVATIVE!!!

Fred Thompson Considering a Run for the White House??? I Sure Hope SO!

_________________________

Conservatives have finally caught a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel. No, it’s not and oncoming train! It is, however, somebody conservatives can vote for! Former Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee. You’ll find an interesting article on the jocking for position by Thompson and his supporters in this article from Scripps News… click the following link:
http://scrippsnews.com/node/20043
Conservatives have been down in the dumps for, well, honestly… about six years now. We have longed for conservative leadership in Washington and, frankly, had none. The Republican candidates, already announced, are a lot of things… but none of them is a REAL conservative. Oh, they utter the phrases they need to, but we can tell... their hearts are not in it. Fred, on the other hand, is a REAL conservative. When Fred utters the words, he MEANS them!

Up to now, it was beginning to look as though I would be forced to sit the ’08 election out. There was/is no candidate out there I can support… unless Fred Thompson tosses his hat into the ring.

Newt? I don’t know what Newt’s intentions are. Nobody does. I think he has made a mistake, right out of the starting blocks. You can only keep folks hanging for so long, and they will tire and turn away. I’m afraid that has already happened to Newt.

Fred Thompson brings ready name recognition… immediately. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, as soon as his visage appears on the TV screen, or on those billboards, eyebrows go up in instant recognition.

Conservatives are longing for a candidate they can support. So far, the GOP has fallen way short of providing such a person. As a conservative... I cannot vote for McCain, Giuliani, or Romney. They’re NOT conservatives. Fred Thompson is.

Over the next few weeks Thompson will be vetted before the Washington crowd. I don’t put much stock in what the GOP on the Hill has to say, however. They bear much of the blame for the mess we are in currently. Frankly, I am much more interested in what my fellow conservatives, out here in the boon docks, have to say.

We will continue to watch this story, as it develops, and keep our ears close to the ground for any hint that Thompson’s campaign will soon kick-off.

You may have noticed that the one thing it has become (almost) imperative to have, for a "successful" Presidential ticket is an authentic Southerner on it. Well, Fred Thompson is a “Sho-Nuff” Southerner!

Yep, just about the time you think it’s gonna be dark forever… the sun comes up!

Here’s to Day Break!

Fred Thompson on the Issues.

Fred Thompson on the Issues

Conservatives have been looking for a Candidate for the office of President in 2008. Fred Thompson may be that candidate.

Some have asked his position on “The Issues”.

The Folks at Red State have an excellent piece based on the Fox News interview with Mr. Thompson on Sunday, March 11th. We highly recommend it:

http://www.redstate.com/stories/elections/2008/fred_thompson_on_the_issues

Conservatives are crying out for representation in Washington. We have none!

So, pardon us if we latch onto Mr. Thompson. It has been a long, dark, night and Mr. Thompson is a ray of sunshine!
