Secession Movements Blossoming
A Commentary by J. D. Longstreet
**************
The title for the petition for the Tar Heel group in North Carolina is: "Peacefully grant the State of North Carolina to withdraw from the United States and create its own NEW government." You may read the text of the petition and learn how to place your signature on it, if you choose, here: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/peacefully-grant-state-north-carolina-withdraw-united-states-and-create-its-own-new-government/rx1KDYTs
Again, as of this writing -- these are the states with petitioning groups: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
While I share their desire to form "a more perfect union" (or not!) outside the current one, in all honesty, they haven't a snowball's chance in hell of succeeding with seceding! (With the possible exception of the state of Texas)
Remember, the Constitution prior to the recent unpleasantness in 1861 did not forbid secession. It still doesn't. The US Supreme Court has done nothing to clarify the issue of secession short of clouding the issue even more. (More about that later.)
The petitions won't even get you to first base. If you are serious, you might want to do as my Confederate ancestors did. (They were determined to secede legally -- and they did -- for all the good it did them!)
Begin by calling your state legislature into session and take a vote on secession. If the state decides they are going to leave the union, then, considering the storm of defecation about to rain down on you (in biblical proportions) by all means -- do so.
Look. A secession movement reminds me of the old expression concerning a conspiracy to kill the king. "If you decide to kill the king, you damn well BETTER KILL him!" A PO'ed king is absolutely the LAST THING you want coming after you.
Do not misunderstand. I happen to be among those who believes that the State of Texas DOES have the right to secede, or separate from the union. (Besides, if Texas does secede, it would give me a place to bolt!) But it must be noted here that the Supreme Court of the United States of America ruled in Texas v. White in 1869 that no state has the right to unilaterally secede. BUT -- and here's where the waters are muddied again -- the court DID say that revolution or consent of the states COULD lead to a successful secession.
Well, OF COURSE, a successful revolution would result in a successful secession! However, obtaining the consent of the remaining states would be an altogether different problem.
The secession question remains up for debate, however, simply because the US Constitution does not specifically forbid it. A 2008 Zogby International poll revealed that 22% of Americans believed that "any state or region has the right to peaceably secede and become an independent republic."
Now, let's be honest here. If the people of a state or states, as did the people of the states of the Confederacy, really get a burr under their collective saddle and really want to leave the union, no phrase, no sentence, no paragraph, no article, NADA, in the Constitution is going to stop them.
Though there have been active secession movements in a number of states for a good many years now, conditions in the US are just now reaching critical mass. The US government, especially under Obama's regime, has all but gone rogue in the perception of many Americans. As a result, Americans are arming themselves, in record numbers, with semi-automatic weapons. Only a fool cannot see that the US citizenry is preparing for armed conflict with someone -- or some entity.
The plain fact is this: Americans don't like their current government. Forget the election results. Look at the number of Americans who did not go to the polls -- because they believe the system was/is rigged.
They see a government in disarray, a President assuming the powers of a king, a dictator, and they do what comes naturally, at least for an American. They grab their guns and prepare to defend their freedom and liberty.
It is entirely possible that what we are seeing with these petitions for secession, is the opening volleys of a nationwide movement that could morph into a very real secession movement that will involve the legislatures of a number of states. When THAT happens, it is no longer a curious activity, it will have become a crisis for the US government.
An observation: Do not expect Obama to react to these petitions. In my opinion, he does not give a damn what the citizens of the country want -- or don't want. He will continue to abuse the powers of the Office of the President especially by issuing Presidential Executive Orders for, at least, the next four years, and maybe longer. Remember it is ONLY the Constitution standing in the way of him pronouncing himself "President for Life." And we ALL know how much Obama reveres the US Constitution.
If the people of a state REALLY want to secede, then they need to begin with their state's legislature. The federal government is not going to take the people seriously until their state government votes in the affirmative for secession. You'll know you have their attention when all federal funding coming into your state is stopped. And that will be only the beginning of all the unpleasant things a gigantic federal government can do, and WILL do, to disabuse you of such a "base" idea as secession.
I think these petitions, taken together, are a harbinger of the end of the fifty-state United States. I have written for many years now that this was bound to happen. Socialism, multiculturalism, and diversity will kill a nation. Doubt me? Look around you.
It is very sad that it is the middle class signing and filing these secession petitions. These are the very Americans the Socialist Democratic Party (AKA: the Democratic Party) makes such a big deal over "saving." YES! It IS the American middle class seeking relief from our socialist government by what some perceive as an extreme method -- secession -- or separation from the country they love.
As the Obama Regime points with pride to the uprisings in the Middle East, known as the "Arab Spring," where, they tell us, multitudes of Arabs are trying to rid themselves of oppressive governments, they either don't know, or don't care, that by next spring, there might well be an "American Spring" in full bloom right along with the Azaleas. The shoots of freedom are already breaking through the crust of the soil. Soon the buds will appear to be quickly followed by a full blossoming into maturity of an "American Spring."
