The Founding of a Democratic Iraq

Has the MSM, in the US, missed the historic moment in the Middle East, or, as is more likely, have they decided to ignore it, as it does not fit their template for failure of the US in the Middle East?

I am referring to; of course, the writing of a constitution in what will become the first Democratic Arab state in the Middle East. Can you see the momentous landmark in the history of the Middle East? Here is a region of the world still living in a 12th century feudal system which has, with the help of the US and others, thrown off the centuries old yolk of one dictator after another and embraced democracy.

Somehow the MSM doesn’t seem to grasp what a fantastic accomplishment this is.

Sure the writers of Iraq’s constitution are haggling over details. They should. Our forefathers sure as heck didn’t sit down and create our constitution without many days and weeks of arguing back and forth before they produced the document so loved by Americans and emulated by a number of democracies in the world today.

Now, I am not so naive as to believe the Iraqis will have smooth sailing with their fledgling democracy once the founding documents are established. There is always the chance it won’t work and Iraq will slide right back into a dictatorship in a few months. The Iraqis are going to have to fight for their freedom just the same as the US and other democracies around the world. Allowing themselves to be doormats for any strongman who comes along must end and they must stand on their own two feet without assistance from the US.

Now, for long time readers of this blog, do not suppose that I have suddenly come around to supporting the efforts of the US at “Nation Building”. I certainly have not. However, we are already committed to building a new Iraq and to stop now, would be a failure in the eyes of the world. We cannot afford that.

I am still in favor of bombing any adversary back to the Stone Age and walking away. But the dye is cast in Iraq and we have no choice but to stay the course.

It is becoming clearer everyday that our next battlefield will be in Iran. We will need a friendly nation at our back when the war in Iran begins.

I have said, from day one, there would be permanent US bases in Iraq. I still believe that.

In the meantime, we need to support the Iraqis, as they become a part of the modern democratic world.

I would advise you, sir, to look beneath the surface of the polls and see who was actually polled.

The MSM has been laboring mightily since the war began to convince the public that the Iraq war is another Viet Nam.

How many additional lives of our service men have their efforts cost?
