I find it exquisitely telling that the viewership of the news shows of the Fox News Channel beat the Republican Debate on CNN the other night!

Roger Ailes, the head honcho of Fox News, is quoted as having said: “The candidates that can’t face Fox, can’t face Al Qaeda, and that’s what’s coming.” Mr. Ailes is said to have offered this pearl of wisdom the other night at the 9th annual presentation of the Eric Breindel awards for opinion writing.

There is certainly something to that. Although Mr. Ailes was referring to the Democrat candidates, the same would certainly apply to the Repubican candidates… indeed, ANY candidates.

Why do you suppose the audience was so low for the Republican debate on CNN. I’ll give you two good reasons, as a Repubican myself. First… the debate was broacast, or cablecast, on CNN. Conservatives don’t watch CNN. It is NEVER turned on in my home. If it is, by accident, turned on, I quickly order it taken down… immediately!

Second, it was a Republican debate. No conservative wants to hear the bunch of light-weighs the GOP is fielding at the moment. Conservatives simply are not interested. They have nothing to say, that I, as a conservative, want to hear. Nothing.

Conservatives are creatures of the political right! That’s where we live. We are dug-in to our positions, on the right, and have no intention of changing. So, as BOTH major political parties, in America, shifted to the left, Conservatives remained exactly where they/we are, and have been, all along. Our core beliefs have NOT changed. So, why then, would we be the least bit interested in what the gaggle of GOP candidates have to say on a debate cablecast on, arguably, the most non-conservative network based in America?

One final thing: It is WAY TOO EARLY to have debates! It is WAY TOO EARLY To be this deep into a political campaign! Unless, those instigating this early launch hope to create disinterest and boredom and yes, even apathy, among the voters by election day. A little slight of hand, perhaps? I mean, aren’t you about fed up with it already? Of coure, there are the folks who never engage in ploitics until the eleventh hour. They won’t be affected by this early launch. But, as a rule they are not activists on the political scene in America. Those of us who are, tend to latch onto a political campaign at the outset and remain with it to the, sometimes, bitter end. And WE are the people whom the “Early Launch” instigators would like to be rid. (A little of my paranoia peeking above the rim, there!)

But, the fact remains, until the GOP fields a conservative candidate, with an honest to goodness chance… conservatives are not interested!

I too don't watch cnn, msnbc, or fox noise, I am tired of their right wing, republican kissing antics.... I listen to NPR and Air America and watch free speach tv or link tv when I want centrist news.... I am tired of the corporate crap.... Sometimes the Colber report or the Daily show are DVR'd or TiVo'd for viewing in my not so free time. We need more real independent news sources in this country...

I don't listen to NPR nor watch PBS . I feel they are both "government radio and TV."

As a commercial broadcaster I had to run my stations in such a manner that they paid for themselves and not with the hard earned tax money of the US taxpayers.

I honestly don't know how you get an independent news service. They will be beholden to somebody, that is a fact.

We the public support them.... I want my news source in "attack mode" every time an elected official says anything. I want them in attack mode when we decide to go to war; it would be the only way to ensure a quick victory. I do not want flag waving, spineless lap dogs of the government giving me my news. Nor do I want Whitehouse talking points to be the headlines of my papers which are all that seemed to be out there since Bush took office. The more critical one is of the government the more I support them. Remember it is government "job" to increase its powers; it is our duty to limit them and their invasion into the homes and lives of the governed. I want a world where and INDIVIDUAL can do whatever they wish, it is governments job to ensure we can and to protect the individuals from the masses if individual liberties are to exist.

What I take out of the fact that Fox programming beat the Republican debate is that conservative voters are apparently willing to have FNC tell them what to think about the candidates rather than finding out for themselves by watching the debate.

This conservative voter wasn't watching Fox news at the time, either. I don't care, and I expect that MOST comservatives don't care, what that covey of light-weights the GOP is shoving out for us to choose from, has to say... period! We not intersted in them... at all.

When there is a conservative, I mean a REAL conservative in the mix, THEN we'll take an interest. Until then, the announced candidates, can blow all the smoke they want. We simply, as I said, are not interested!

Best regards!
