Saving Obama's, er, FACE! ... J. D. Longstreet

Saving Obama's, er, FACE!
A Commentary by J. D. Longstreet

**************

This whole Syrian thing has now gotten ridiculous.

Am I to believe that the people of the US are being asked to commit the US military to a war in Syria/the Middle East just to save face for the President?  That's what it boils down to.

Look.  The people of the US have had it with fighting wars in that God-forsaken piece of real estate to save "those people" from themselves only to walk out multiple years later with the prognosis for that country just as bad as it was the day we went in.

I've a suggestion for the White House.  Mr. Obama, if you want to go to war so badly in Syria, why don't you take your Praetorian Guard -- the troops you have been training and arming over at DHS -- and just invade Syria to your heart's content, huh?  As there appears not to be an imminent insurrection in America, we don't really need a domestic army and, well, we're paying them for just standing around with their thumbs, well, you know where.

I am now convinced, as I have postulated before, that this is now a micturating (Google it!) contest between Obama and Putin, and whoever the heck is in charge in Iran these days.

And you folks in Europe need to understand that we Americans understand, clearly, that our President shot his mouth off when he shouldn't have and created this mess in the first place.  He was, as we say down South: "talking big."  It was in the heat of a political campaign.  American politicians have been known to, ahem, stretch the truth a bit, or as we sometimes say:  "give truth scope."  Occasionally, we even call it what it is -- a lie.

And then there are the promises and the boasts.  Most Americans have learned over the centuries that most, if not all, of what emanates from a politician's mouth is to be disregarded.

Sometimes they even "show-off."  They begin to feel their oats when the polls show them leading for a few days and they begin to prance and parade and strut.  THAT is what Obama was doing when he opened his mouth and stuck his foot as deeply down his throat as he possibly could with his remark about the use of chemical weapons by Syria being a red line.

It was a dumb, stupid, amateurish thing to say -- and Obama said it.  At that moment his mouth wrote a check his behind could not cash.  (How many times did we mention that Obama was/is an amateur, and was not then -- and is not now -- ready for the office of President of the United States?)    This is the sort of thing that happens when a country elects people to office who are so obviously not qualified for that office.
One may be the most powerful man on the planet and still not be the smartest person in the room!  In fact, one of the problems with believing you are always the smartest person in the room -- and -- having an entourage of sycophants incessantly reinforcing that belief is that quite often you are blind-sided by some one having the temerity to actually BE smarter than you, or having the courage to ask a question, the answer to which -- you do not know!

Back in my broadcast news days, I'd ask the person I was about to interview if there was any question he or she was not prepared to answer -- for whatever reason.  That simple routine lessened the pressure on both of us and made for a smoother, more relaxed, interview.

Someone once sad: "A man is never so empty as when he is full of himself."  I submit that that was the circumstance under which Obama uttered the red line remark.

It is clear as a bell that the American people do not want to go to war in Syria, nor anywhere else in the Middle East, save for Iran, of course.

The average American does not buy into the "responsibility to protect" BS from the United Nations.  The average American does not hold with interjecting ourselves into someone else's civil war, either.  And MOST Americans do not agree with lending aid and assistance to terrorists who have killed and maimed thousands of Americans here, in the US, and around the world.  As crass as it may seem, we are not particularly repelled by observing our enemies killing each other off in those religious and civil wars they seem to love so much.

If our narcissistic President wants to do the RIGHT thing, he will address the nation and state simply that even though he, in all his wisdom, REALLY wants to attack Syria, he has heard the voice of the people and will abide by our wishes and will, therefore, NOT attack Syria.

Do I think for one single solitary moment he will do that?

Of course not!

Come on, folks!  This is "OBAMA the INFALLIBLE."  He doesn't make mistakes.  When the world comes crashing down around him he will stand there with that "What?  Me worry?" expression on his face.  Besides, it's not his fault.  It is ALWAYS someone else's fault ... ALWAYS.

So.  Look for Obama, the snake oil salesman, to appear this week before the American people and try to make a case for attacking Syria that the majority of the people will accept.  And make no mistake, some certainly will accept Obama's reasoning and shift their support to him.  Don't forget the ignorance ratio, the relative magnitude of ignorance, in America today!  Do so at your peril.

But remember:  It isn't as though this administration has not lied to the American people before.   Look at their track record.

The bottom line is: It is not worth shedding American blood and spending American treasure to save face for President Obama.
The President should realize that he can't unring the red line bell, but he can face up to it. He can tell the truth and put a stop to the foolishness of attacking Syria.
